Janet L.
Chatary
May 31, 1940 – March 3, 2025
A private Celebration of Life service for the family will be held to honor her memory. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Village Baptist Church 1950 Mitchellville Road, Bowie, MD 20716 and designated to the Choir Fund in her memory .
Janet Lee Chatary, 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 31, 1940, to Ethel and Carl Sylvis, who, along with her beloved brother Roderick 'Butch' Sylvis and sister Barbara Bayliss, preceded her in death; and she is survived by her sister Dorothy Sylvis.
Janet shared a beautiful life with her devoted husband, Raymond Chatary, with whom she celebrated 66 years of marriage - a testament to their enduring love and partnership. Together, they built a family filled with warmth, laughter, and love. She was a cherished mother to Barbara Tydings (Bill), Linda Perry (Mark), and Raymond Chatary, Jr. (Nan), and a proud grandmother (Memaw) to 13 grandchildren (and spouses) and 14 great-grandchildren, with two more expected this month; a sister-in-law to Andrea Richards, and an aunt to many nieces and nephews. Her family was her greatest joy, and she dedicated her life to nurturing and supporting them.
Janet will be remembered for her kindness, strength, and unwavering love. She found joy singing whether in the church choir, with the Bowie Chorale, or performing in numerous musical theater productions. Her passion for cooking, baking, and decorating cakes brought delight to those around her. She had a generous heart, a gentle spirit, and a way of making everyone around her feel valued and cared for. Her legacy of love and devotion will continue to live on through the generations she leaves behind as she takes up residence in heaven to spend eternity with Jesus.
Though she is no longer with us, Janet's love and wisdom will forever be a guiding light in the hearts of those who knew her.
